Shawshank redemption
Orange is the new black
Orange is the new Black is among my favorite representations of the prison system. Portraying the experience of prison through women of many races, religions, and sexual identities offers a novel glimpse of prison life to the American public. One of the most powerful messages the T.V. series portrays is the superior attitude of those who are not incarcerated over those who are incarcerated.
Prior to this show and class I didn’t realize how much more there is to the judgement of person than, “bad people go to prison and good people stay out of prison.” Over time, the series reveals problems present in the prison system such as sexual assault, discrimination, poor living conditions, greed, and the prison industrial complex. With each episode a new penal system issue is revealed and a new perspective is offered on the lives of incarcerated women. |
Summary: Orange is the new Black is a television film series sponsored by Netlfix. It follows the main character, Piper, through her experience of being incarcerated for a crime she committed at a young age. Piper is a relatively affluent white woman who goes to prison thinking she is superior to the inmates.
